Keystone - December 2003
The search for Northern Ireland's building of the year has begun, following the announcement of the shortlist for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Northern Ireland's `Excellence in the Built Environment Awards', held in association with MD&C Laser Processes.
Shortlisted buildings from Londonderry, Coleraine, Belfast, Lisburn and Holywood will now battle it out for the prestigious title of 'Building of the Year', with the winner to be announced at an awards - ceremony in ' Belfast's Malone House on December 3 2003.
RICS Northern Ireland Director Ian Murray says that the winner will combine financial viability, sustainability, and a positive community impact with an obvious visual appeal.
"The RICS Northern Ireland 'Excellence in the Built Environment Awards' which are sponsored by Belfast-based MD&C Laser Processes look at more than aesthetical appearance", he says. "Real sustainability is sought, as well as value for money, impact on the local community and ongoing viability in terms of occupational use are all taken into account", he explained.
"The Excellence in the Built Environment Awards encourage and ' recognise outstanding achievement in ' conservation, regeneration and enhancement of the built and natural environment. They reflect the wide range and high quality of work done by chartered surveyors and other related professionals in Northern Ireland." The RICS NI Excellence in the Built Environment Awards will present three category prizes - Building Conservation, Regeneration and Sustainability - as well as the overall 'Building of the Year' award.
